Tameside welcomed thousands of residents and visitors on Friday 29 May as the borough came alive for the much‑loved Whit Friday Brass Band Contests.
Across 11 contest venues, crowds joined to enjoy an evening of fantastic live music, community spirit, and friendly competition. This year’s event saw 52 bands perform across Tameside, bringing with them around 1,500 players and support staff.
The event was supported by Tameside Council, and over 140 volunteers who collectively contributed around 1,000 hours on the day.
Foden’s Band delivered an outstanding performance throughout the night, securing first place at an impressive six contests and earning the title of overall winners for 2026. They have held the title since 2011, winning every contest during that time.
Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, Cllr Leanne Feeley, said: “Whit Friday is one of the most cherished events in our cultural calendar, and this year’s celebrations truly showcased the best of Tameside. Not many towns can say they host something as unique and historic as Whit Friday, and it’s a privilege to keep that tradition thriving!
“The atmosphere was incredible, and it wouldn’t have been possible without our dedicated volunteers, organisers and partners.”
