Planning approval has been granted for a new multi-storey car park in Stalybridge marking a key step in improving the town and supporting its regeneration.
The development forms part of Tameside Council’s wider plans for Stalybridge, including the proposed Stalybridge West scheme, which will bring forward new homes on the Castle Street car park site.
The new multi-storey car park will ensure the town centre does not lose existing parking provision as this brownfield site is redeveloped, maintaining capacity while supporting future growth and investment.
Backed by £20 million of Government funding, the wider regeneration programme aims to boost the local economy, improve access and create better places to live, work and visit. The investment will also help unlock the delivery of new homes on council-owned land in the town centre.
The new car park will provide modern parking spaces in a central location, helping to meet current demand while supporting additional visitors as improvements across the town progress.
This development is one of several projects being led by Tameside Council to improve Stalybridge. By maintaining car parking provision once Stalybridge West is developed, and improving access to the town centre, the car park will help boost visitor numbers and support local shops, cafes, and businesses.
Plans for the car park include more parking spaces, including accessible bays, electric vehicle charging points, secure cycle parking, energy-efficient lighting, and better walking routes into the town centre. The design also supports greener travel options. It will be built to a high standard and designed to fit well with the surrounding area
Councillor McLaren, Tameside Council Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Growth, Housing and Homelessness at Tameside Council, said: “This is an important step forward for Stalybridge. The new multi-storey car park will support our wider plans to improve the town, making it easier for people to visit and spend time here while helping local businesses to grow.”
Now that planning approval has been granted, work will start on the next stage of detailed design and delivery. Work is expected to begin in early 2027, once these plans are complete.
