TechKnow Festival returns to boost digital skills

Date Released - 03/07/2026

Residents are invited to get hands-on with technology this July, with a free festival designed to boost people’s digital skills.

TechKnow Festival will run from 13 to 18 July 2026, offering a programme of digital inclusion activities across local libraries, including Learn My Way and iDEA sessions designed to build confidence online. The highlight is a free community event on Saturday 18 July near Ashton library.

Visitors to the Saturday showcase can enjoy:

• Stalls from PC Refurb, Tameside Community Computers, Flowhesion and Tameside Libraries
• Bookable sessions from ComputerXplorers including Animation and a Minecraft Quest experience, giving younger visitors the chance to put their creativity and problem-solving skills to the test
• The opportunity to write code for Edison the robot before watching him wrestle in the robot ring
• Augmented reality colouring activities, bringing artwork to life through technology
• 3D design and printing workshops
• Drop-in advice and opportunities to try new technology

The week also includes a Smartphone SOS session on Thursday, aimed at anyone struggling to use their device. Residents are encouraged to bring along a phone or tablet for one-to-one help, you can learn about setting up apps, staying safe online, or simply learning the basics. People are also encouraged to bring along family members who may benefit from extra support using their device.

Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, Cllr Leanne Feeley, said: “Digital skills are now essential for everyday life, this could be anything from keeping in touch with loved ones to accessing vital services. TechKnow Festival is about making sure everyone feels confident and included.

“The Saturday event will be a fantastic day out for all ages, with plenty of family-friendly activities including Minecraft challenges and hands-on coding with robots. Our Smartphone SOS session is also a great opportunity to support anyone who may need a helping hand with their device.”

TechKnow Festival supports the council’s commitment to digital inclusion by helping residents gain the skills and confidence needed to thrive in an increasingly online world.
