Over 500 residents came together to celebrate diversity and learn about the cultures that make up Tameside at this year's Sharing Cultures event.
Hosted by Tameside Health (ACM) and Tameside Council's Community Safety Team, the event brought people from different backgrounds together for a day of music, dancing, creativity and learning at Ashton Community Hall.
A wide range of community organisations attended, showcasing information and traditional items of their culture. Visitors had the opportunity to learn more about different communities while enjoying activities and entertainment throughout the day.
A key highlight of the day was a performance by children from the Ukrainian Centre in Ashton and young people from Stockport. Accompanied by an accordion played by an adult within the group, the children performed a selection of traditional Ukrainian dances dressed in national costume.
Creative Coatie hosted bracelet-making and painting activities, while Tameside Council's Community Safety Team, Greater Manchester Police and Constable Cub raised awareness of National Hate Crime Awareness Week through a dedicated information stall. Jigsaw Homes also supported the event by providing food, face painting and an information stand.
The Civic Mayor of Tameside Cllr Helen Bowden and Consort attended, alongside Ashton ward councillors, supporting the celebration of culture, community and inclusion.
Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity, Cllr Stephen Homer said: “What a fantastic day to help celebrate and embrace Tameside’s rich diversity. It is events like these, that really help to share appreciation and pride for the residents that make up our borough, and it was great to see how busy the day was. Thank you to everyone who came along and contributed to the event.”
