JURY Riggers from Copley Academy may have scooped the best in show award, but quite literally everyone was a winner at the second Tameside Hack.
The two-day competition, which took place at Tameside College’s impressive new advanced technology centre, attracted more than 50 young people from schools and colleges across the borough.
It gave entrants the opportunity to learn and develop essential digital skills to make the most of the job opportunities the sector is increasingly bringing to Tameside. Organised by Tameside Council the hack fulfilled the “every child a coder” element of the authority’s 16 for 2016 pledges.
Cllr Lynn Travis, executive member for lifelong learning, said: “It was wonderful to see so many returning hackers from the first event, an impressive number of new entrants, and especially so many girls.
“Like the mentors and judges, I was impressed and inspired by the talent and creativity of each and every one of the teams. It must have been incredibly difficult to decide the winners.
“We all witnessed the extraordinary talent Tameside has to offer and saw websites, apps, games, programs and innovative and potentially lucrative solutions to real-world digital problems.”
The Hack received sponsorship from Purple, Brother UK, Avecto, Arcadis UK and Tameside and Glossop Care Together. The challenges ranged from raising awareness of safety on social media, to promoting health and wellbeing services in Tameside, to developing solutions for housing and spatial planning.
Janet Paignton, a mentor and judge from Purple, commented: “I came to the second Tameside Hack because I enjoyed the first one so much. The great range of challenges made for an excellent competition, and watching teams that had never met interact so well together was an amazing experience.”
Mentor Sam Johnson of Brother UK, a challenge setter, added: “It was a fantastic two days. The level of ability was phenomenal.”
