ADULTS of all ages in Tameside are being encouraged to get their blood pressure checked to help them keep on top of their health.
To date over 1000 residents have had their blood pressure checked as part of a borough-wide hypertension campaign. However, although it’s estimated 1 in 3 adults in Tameside have high blood pressure, many people don’t know they may have it.
High blood pressure, also commonly known as hypertension, is one of the leading risk factors for premature death and long term illness and can also lead to strokes, heart attacks, chronic kidney disease and some types of dementia.
Regular blood pressure checks enable people to take early steps to tackle hypertension and reduce the associated ill health risks. People can book a blood pressure check with their GP or contact Be Well Tameside on 0161 716 2000 to see where they are holding their free Community NHS Health Checks.
Anyone whose blood pressure is found to be high, will be closely monitored until it is brought under control. Their doctor will usually suggest changes to lifestyle and, sometimes, medication to achieve this
