TAMESIDE has a new Whit Friday band contest. The Albion pub in Dukinfield has joined the list of venues for what is often termed the greatest free show on earth, taking the total to 12.
In another change, Ashton’s Broadoak competition has moved from the Broadoak Hotel where landlord Robert Frost has retired after 40 years. It will now be staged at near-by Ashton Rugby Club.
Whit Friday (June 9) is part of the borough’s cultural fabric. It was traditionally the day on which Whitsuntide walks of witness were held, and band contests have taken place since 1884.
In May and June, an exhibition about the history of the contests will be staged at Tameside Central Art Gallery, above Tameside Central Library on Old Street, Ashton.
A Tameside Council spokesman said: “Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, Whit Friday is an event to be savoured and enjoyed.
“Once again, with support from the Friends of Tameside Whit Friday Brass Band Committee, Tameside Council, Tameside Radio, local businesses and an army of volunteers, it promises to be a day to remember.
“The local challengers of Ashton, Mossley and Stalybridge Old, among others, will have an eye on the prizes in the local championship. Once again, any youth band that competes at six venues will be in contention for the Tameside Youth Championship which is again being generously sponsored by Premier Kia in Dukinfield.”
Bands and followers will be able to keep abreast of events throughout the evening via the Twitter handle @tmbc_culture and by using the hashtag #WhitBrass17. Tameside Radio will also giving regular updates.
