IF you’re struggling to pay your power bills, it doesn’t take a leap of faith to save money. Actually, it’s a very straightforward process. All you have to do is get in touch with LEAP – the Local Energy Advice Programme.
LEAP is funded by the major energy companies and offers a comprehensive free package of help to the most vulnerable households.
Highly-trained energy advisers visit people who have been referred by Tameside Council and its partners, and carry out thorough assessments of their homes. In some cases they can make immediate improvements – such as fitting LED light bulbs, draughtproofing and pipe lagging.
Where funding is available, they may be able to make arrangements for larger-scale measures such as loft insulation.
However, their input goes far beyond looking at energy efficiency. They also offer advice on reducing bills, maximising income and available benefits, and help to identify other vulnerabilities in the home while making referrals to the appropriate agencies.
A Tameside Council spokesman said: “We plan to make at least 100 referrals to the scheme before the end of June, and have trained frontline staff in what to do. Hopefully, this is going to make a huge difference to our most vulnerable residents.”
