Try new things during the Festival of Learning

Date Released - 06/06/2017

THE Festival of Learning is touching down in Tameside this month, with an open day at Tameside Adult Community Education (ACE) and free events at Tameside Central Library, Ashton.

Celebrating and promoting adult learning opportunities, the Festival comes as Tameside ACE hold their open day on Tuesday, 13 June. Anyone can pop in between 9.30am and 7pm to have a look at what courses are on offer and sign up to any of the taster sessions taking place across the day. There will also be an afternoon tea from 1 to 3pm, giving the chance to chat informally with staff and students.

Tameside ACE offers a wide range of courses with a focus on essential skills for life and work, from beginners to advanced. Their mission is to break down barriers to learning, provide opportunities that will enable learners to secure employment and achieve their full potential, and ultimately have a positive impact on the borough as a whole.

This mission is clearly reflected in some of the things that are on offer on the day – Be Positive, Writing CVs and Covering Letters, Fun with Maths, and Creative Writing. The student services officer, tutors and National Careers Service will be on hand throughout the day to help.

Also in celebration of the one-week festival, on Wednesday, 21 June, Tameside Central Library, is hosting a full day of taster sessions and activities, giving the chance to learn something new and be inspired to try new hobbies that are out of the ordinary.

Those who book on to the free sessions will have the choice of a yoga session, still life drawing and creative sessions on how to make corsages and hanging baskets. Also on offer is a session to raise spirits with a Jar of Smiles, and finally you will have the chance to see non-fiction authors, David Hewitt and Mark Henderson, give a different perspective on the First World War.

The festival is hoped to be a brilliant promotion of the positive role that adult learning plays, and will cater to all tastes.
