Students see construction at first hand

Date Released - 27/06/2017

TAMESIDE College students are eagerly taking advantage of a chance to visit the new joint public service centre that is being built in Ashton.

Carillion, who are in charge of construction, have organised a series of “hard-hat and hi-vis” tours which allow young people to enhance their studies by getting a close-up look at the cutting-edge methods being used on the project.

So far this month, almost 100 level-one students in painting and decorating, carpentry, bricklaying, plumbing and construction have been to the site and met industry professionals face to face.

Cllr Jim Fitzpatrick, Tameside Council’s first deputy, said: “This scheme perfectly demonstrates Tameside Council’s desire to use local developments to create opportunities for our residents in terms of work experience, job placements, apprenticeships and training.”

Gail Clifford, central support and enrichment manager at Tameside College, added: “Feedback from tutors and students is all positive. The students have been energised by their experience at Carillion.”

The joint service centre is part of Vision Tameside, an ambitious development strategy partnership between Tameside Council and Tameside College to transform learning and skills in the borough to generate greater economic prosperity.

Phase one involved Clarendon College, which was completed in 2015, and the new advanced technologies centre at Tameside College’s Beaufort Road, Ashton, campus which opened its doors a year later.

The joint public service centre, which will be shared by the council and college, forms part of phase two. It incorporates the latest energy-saving innovations, and from a council perspective will provide a more customer-friendly and cost-effective building that provides better services for residents. It’s estimated it will save almost £55 million over the next 30 years.

Phase three will see Tameside College redevelop Beaufort Road to ensure it offers learners outstanding facilities. Students will have access to the very best engineering workshops, construction and the built environment, motor vehicle, sport and public services, and health and social care provision.
