TAMESIDE Council is looking forward to working closely with Morrisons as it seeks to take the number of employers signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant past the 100 mark.
The Yorkshire-based supermarket chain signalled their support for the covenant in 2015. By doing so they made a public statement of their determination to help service personnel who are looking for work on their return to civilian life.
Group chief executive David Potts, who grew up in Ashton, said: “We at Morrisons owe a tremendous debt to members of the armed forces because of the enormous contribution they make to our country both during and after their service.
“Signing the covenant shows our commitment to the armed forces and the support we offer to veterans, reservists and their families.”
Being part of the Armed Forces Covenant employer scheme costs firms next to nothing. A company’s involvement is almost entirely in kind rather than cash, and a council covenant officer calls to explain how things works and how businesses can play their part and benefit from the many transferable skills service-leavers have.
Cllr Frank Travis, Tameside Council’s armed forces champion, said: “Morrisons have an excellent record of support for former service personnel and we look forward to working closely with them. With stores in Dukinfield, Denton and Hyde they are one of the borough’s key employers.

Morrisons resourcing manager Paula Willoughby, who served in the Royal Logistic Corps, added: “We have ex-military personnel throughout our business, from technology managers at head office in Bradford to senior managers in stores and engineers across our manufacturing and logistics sites.
“The opportunities available for service-leavers at Morrisons are massively diverse and exciting.”
Tameside Council’s efforts to find jobs for former military personnel have been rewarded with a national accolade. The authority has received the bronze award from the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme and is hoping to swiftly move on to the silver stage.
