CLLR Denise Ward is Tameside Council’s new Civic Mayor-elect. The Denton North East ward member will assume the chain of office at the council’s annual meeting on Tuesday, May 23.
Originally from Gorton, Cllr Ward moved to Denton in 1979. She was elected to Tameside Council in 2009 and is a member of the Greater Manchester Pension Fund and Speaker’s Panel (Planning).
She was deputy mayor in 2014-15 and is west area district co-ordinator for Denton Town Council.
Cllr Ward is married to fellow councillor David McNally (St Peter’s) and the couple have four children – sons Sam and Thomas and daughters Nichola and Lisa. They also have four grandsons: Henry, Matthew, Leo and Olly.
Outside the authority, Cllr Ward is a governor at St Thomas More RC College, Denton, president of Victoria Park Community Centre and chair of Denton North East Homewatch and Broomfields Residents’ Association.
Cllr Ward is a hairdresser and has run her own business in Manchester city centre for almost 40 years.
For relaxation she enjoys community work, spending time with her family, holidays, reading, going to the gym, and meeting up with schoolfriends.
The Mayor-elect said: “I’m really looking forward to my year of office. I know it will be very busy but I’m sure it will be very rewarding too.
“I’m especially looking forward to working with as many community groups and schools as possible, and to meeting volunteers of all ages.”
During her time as Civic Mayor, Cllr Ward will be supported by her husband, Cllr David McNally, who will be Mayoral Consort.
The Deputy Mayor-elect is Cllr Leigh Drennan of Hurst ward.
