A Tameside Council children’s home has received the local Food4Life Gold award for providing and encouraging a healthy environment its young people.
The award recognises the healthy eating and healthy lifestyle practices used by carers, as it is important for young people to get the right amount of energy and nutrients to help them grow.
Carers were asked to provide evidence of a variety of healthy lifestyle topics including menu planning, consultation and staff training which directly affects children in care.
It was developed by the children’s nutrition team, part of Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust supported by the safeguarding children team.
Children in care share the same health risks as their peers but often to a greater extent because of the impact poverty, poor parenting, chaotic lifestyles and abuse can have.
Therefore it is important that having an understanding of eating a varied, balanced diet can help children by encouraging social learning and developing independence.
Paul, the residential practice manager, said: ““It is fantastic to be the first children’s home to receive this award. It is very much a team effort here and we are thrilled that we have been recognised as a home that actively promotes healthy lifestyles for looked after children. We are lucky to have some great staff striving to provide the best possible care, which includes being part of new initiatives that ultimately help achieve positive outcomes for our young people.”
Becky Paul, the nutrition advisor who presented the award, said “The Food4Life award is a chance for care providers to celebrate, and be recognised for, good practice around healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. It is given to homes that show a whole team approach to the provision and promotion of healthy food. To achieve the Food4Life award at Gold status they have all worked really hard and have shown a variety of different methods for communicating healthy eating.”
