Tameside's fibre optics are in the fast lane

Date Released - 29/03/2018

TAMESIDE’S fibre-optic infrastructure is not only speeding towards completion – it’s getting bigger and better.

Already seven of the borough’s towns are connected and thanks to an additional £2.5 million that the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has awarded as part of a wider Greater Manchester project, fibre connectivity will be extended not only into Mossley and Hattersley, but as far as Hadfield and Glossop in the High Peak.

The Tameside Digital Infrastructure Co-operative is also now up and running having been approved by Financial Conduct Authority. Telecoms and Internet service providers who are members will now be able to use the new fibre network to deliver gigabit services to residents and businesses across the borough.

Tim Rainey, assistant director Digital Tameside, said: “This is really good news and a real vote of confidence from the Government in our fibre connectivity plans and vision. This additional funding comes on top of £2.2 million they gave us last year to help with our fibre roll-out.

“This is the type of technological change and investment that will equip Tameside businesses to compete in the 21st century economy.

“It’s a great example of the public sector leading the way with partners such as Tameside College, New Charter Housing and the National Health Service all contributing funding alongside the council to make this project happen.

“Tameside will have unrivalled fibre coverage and internet connectivity speeds among the fastest in the country, giving it a significant advantage over rivals. Almost half the borough’s businesses and properties will soon be close to a connection working through the new state of the art data centre being built as part of the phase II redevelopment of Ashton Old Baths.”

The council is in the process of organising engagement sessions to allow companies to meet co-operative members to discuss the internet services on offer.
