Adult learning provision is officially ace

THE future is looking bright for adult learners in Tameside according to a newly published Oftsed report.

Inspectors have rated the Tameside ACE (Adult & Community Education) service as ‘good’, highlighting how it is responsive to local people’s training needs -including those in the hardest to reach and most deprived communities – and supporting people to achieve their goals.

The service, based in new premises in Stamford Chambers, Old St, Ashton town centre, gives residents the chance to continue or return to learning with a focus on essential skills for life and work, including IT, maths, English and employability. It runs small, friendly classes open to all and provides a comfortable and supportive environment to help people succeed, improve their life chances and employment prospects.

The Ofsted report said that since the previous inspection - when the service was rated as ‘requires improvement’ - senior leaders, managers and governors have worked hard to improve the quality of provision. As a result, teaching, learning, assessment and outcomes for adult learners are now good.

Inspectors noted leaders and managers have developed good partnerships with a range of organisations that are of considerable benefit to learners. These include the National Careers Service, a housing association and Jobcentre Plus.

They also said that staff create an inclusive and safe learning environment that supports learners well. The report states learners receive good learning and pastoral support, which helps them to stay on their courses, make good progress and achieve their goals.

And it highlights how learners on English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) courses improve their English skills so they can become more involved in their communities. While learners on information and communication technology (ICT) courses develop good and useful practical skills and achieve well.

Inspectors found that learners benefit from good, impartial careers information, advice and guidance to help them plan their next steps and longer term career aspirations. They also praised the move to one location in the heart of Ashton town centre, which is easy for people to access.
