New cycle stands and shelters for Tameside

Date Released - 25/04/2018

NEW cycle stands and shelters are being installed across Tameside in a bid to boost journeys by bike.

Tameside Council is fitting the facilities after securing £15,000 of funding through the City Cycle Ambition Grant, which is administered by Transport for Greater Manchester.

Eleven new cycle stands have been installed in Hyde Town Centre on the Market Ground, and will include a shelter when fully completed, and a further five outside the Post Office.

This week in Stalybridge, another five cycle stands, with provision for ten bikes, are due to be installed and covered by a shelter at Armentieres Square and a further five stands in Grosvenor Square.

More facilities are due to be installed in Denton town centre.

The City Cycle Ambition Grant is for investment in high-quality infrastructure to make cycling a convenient, attractive and safe travel choice for everyone. It aims to increase the number of journeys made by bike across Greater Manchester from two per cent to ten per cent by 2025.

Tameside Council is campaigning to tackle air pollution, which is estimated to contribute to the premature deaths of up to 2,000 people in Greater Manchester each year. The air quality campaign calls on people to walk or cycle where possible, use public transport, car share and to consider upgrading to a hybrid or electric vehicle when looking for a new car.
