Award finalist Alex is a true champ

Date Released - 09/05/2018

A TAMESIDE Council worker who has overcome many obstacles to achieve for both herself and others has been shortlisted in the new Greater Manchester Health and Care Champions Awards.

Alex Milhench has been named as a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category in the awards, the first Greater Manchester-wide awards to recognise members of the workforce who regularly go above and beyond to improve the health and wellbeing of others.

Alex, a careleaver, started an apprenticeship with Tameside Council at the age of 17 and has since successfully secured a fixed term position for  the Family Information Service as an Information, Advice and Guidance Officer.

Among her many attributes, Alex has been recognised for hugely increased confidence, a positive attitude, commitment to her personal development, exceptional customer care skills and excellent IT knowledge - which she has shared to help develop other members of the team.

She has used her IT skills to reorganise the Council’s Service Information Directory (SID) for children and young people - a really valued piece of work.

Her manager has praised her “professional, calm and understanding” manner when communicating with families and her commitment to supporting children and families in the best way she can.

Tameside Council Executive Leader Cllr Brenda Warrington said: “This is much deserved recognition for Alex, who clearly shines in her role and is committed to doing her best to improve the lives of others. This is all the more inspiring given the obstacles she has overcome to get where she is today –  well done Alex, you are a credit to yourself and to Tameside and clearly have a bright future ahead of you.”

The awards are being organised by Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership, with support from the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

There are 11 awards recognising the different but equally important contributions people make, from unpaid carers to students and apprentices, from established leaders to new and emerging rising stars. The winners will be announced 13 July 2018.
