FOLLOWING a sustained and complex distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack, the Tameside Council website and its online services are now back online.
The Council’s online systems were targeted in a malicious attempt to disrupt their online systems by saturating their internet connections with “junk” traffic. This traffic was generated by online criminals from hundreds of different IP address in a deliberate attempt to force their systems offline.
A Tameside Council Spokesperson said: “We are pleased that our website and online services are now up and running. As a caution, throughout the rest of May, we will keep in place the back-up cash and cheque option of payment at Customer Services in Clarence Arcade, Stamford St, Ashton. The freephone number (0800 0856531) set up for Council Tax, Business Rates, Sundry Debts including adult social care invoices, and car park fines will now remain available for use permanently. There are still some residual technical issues that the council are dealing with but these do not affect the online services or any payment functions.
“At no point did the DDOS attack penetrate through the council’s security firewalls. At all times during the attack all of our systems and data were safe. The decision to take the web site off line was made so that other services and functions which rely on our internet connectivity such as email and BACS payments could continue to operate normally until a solution was in place.
“We made a conscious decision not to publicise the exact nature of the disruption to our online services as advertising your website is under attack has the potential to encourage other would be cyber criminals to make further attacks. Our systems were not illegally accessed as a result of this attack. Our security systems were resilient and impenetrable and our data remains secure. The attack served absolutely no purpose other than to disrupt our services.”
