Fostering champions take over Park Run

FOSTER carers, social workers and other children’s champions from Tameside are hoping to make a big impact this Saturday (19 May) by taking part in a regional ‘parkrun takeover’.

As part of national Foster Care Fortnight 14-27 May, fostering teams from across the north west will be taking over their local parks runs to spread the message that fostering transforms lives and help recruit more foster carers.

In Tameside, a team of Council foster carers, staff and members - including Executive Leader Cllr Brenda Warrington and Chief Executive Steven Pleasant -  will attend Hyde parkrun as either runners or volunteer marshalls.

They will also have a fostering stand at Hyde Park Band Stand as part of the parkrun event from 8.30am- 10am, where people can find out more about fostering and talk informally to foster carers and social workers about what is involved.

Cllr Warrington said: “We’re delighted to be taking part in this regional park run take over as part of Foster Care Fortnight and would like to thank Hyde parkrun for making us so welcome. We know many foster carers nationally take part in park runs so the park run community is a fantastic audience for helping us to promote fostering and recruit new carers.

“We want to hear from people of all ages and backgrounds who may be able to provide a stable and caring home to help transform the life of a child or young person. You could be the person who makes that difference.”

Liz Shingler, of Hyde parkrun, said: “We have lots of families in our parkrun community and we’re pleased to support Foster Care Fortnight and help highlight this inspirational message that foster carers transform children and young people’s lives.”

Tameside Council foster carers receive full training, support and an allowance. There are lots of different flexible opportunities for foster carers - from long-term placements to emergency and respite care – which can fit around other work and commitments.
