AN information event is being held in Tameside for people interested in adoption and making a difference to a child’s life.
Adoption Now, which brings together several local authorities including Tameside Council, is celebrating its eight month of finding families for local ‘looked after’ children with a fresh call for more adopters.
Since its launch in November 2017, Adoption Now has found families for a total of 80 children but a further 80 children - from a wide variety of backgrounds, age groups and all with different needs - are currently waiting for a family.
Adoption Now will hold a local drop in for anyone in the Tameside area interested in adopting on Wednesday 27 June – please call 01204 336096 for times and venue information.
Almost half of the children currently waiting for families need to be adopted with their brothers or sisters, a third are aged five to eight years old and it is estimated that around half of these children will have some additional needs whether that be emotional relating to their early childhood experiences or relating to a medical condition.
Adoption Now is a regional adoption agency which combines the expert local authority adoption teams from Blackburn with Darwen, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale & Tameside council’s to deliver outstanding adoption services across the North West.
The agency prides itself on achieving the best for their children, so having adopters from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures is essential.
Karen Barrick, head of service at Adoption Now, said: “Every one of the children we have waiting for adoption is different, each with their own unique and wonderful personalities, but what they all share is a difficult start in life and the need for a loving family who can give them the opportunities they need to thrive.”
Tameside Council Executive Member for Children and Families Cllr Oliver Ryan said: “"We're looking for safe, loving and supportive environments for our children, where they can play, learn and grow. Whether you live alone, are in a relationship, are LGBT, rent your home or own it, whether you're older or younger - if you want to adopt, talk to Adoption Now.
“We're not looking for perfect, we're looking to find our children loving and supportive forever families. Adoption Now are here to answer your questions and support you throughout your adoption journey."
