Tameside shines in school awards

Date Released - 12/07/2018

Congratulations to two inspirational Tameside teachers who were recognised in the Greater Manchester School Awards 2018.

Linda Emmett of All Saints Catholic College, Dukinfield, was named Headteacher of the Year while Barbara Brerton of St John Fisher RC Primary School, Denton, won the Student Teacher of the Year title.

Linda’s success reflects how she has led the once struggling All Saints on an extraordinary journey of improvement since taking over in September 2015.

She said: “This doesn’t just reflect me but our team of staff, parents and pupils who are working together to transform a school that was so broken. We have all had to dig deep and work together to transform the school into somewhere that is so happy.”

Barbara was nominated for her award after a 20 year journey from being a parent volunteer and helper at St John Fisher to becoming a fully qualified teacher – while being a classroom assistant, nursery nurse and SEN specialist at the school during the intervening years. Her achievement is all the more special as both she and her husband were pupils at the school as were her children.

She said: ““Winning the student teacher of the year award is one of the proudest moments of my life.  I’m completely overwhelmed.  Things like this don’t happen to people like me – I’m just doing the job which has been my dream for many, many years”.
