Digital Co-operative Up and Running

Date Released - 12/07/2018

THE Tameside Digital Infrastructure Co-operative (TDIC) is up and running and ready to provide gigabit services to residents and businesses across the borough.

Telecoms and internet service providers that join the scheme get access to the new ultrafast dark fibre broadband network connecting more than 100 key council and health buildings across the borough, as well as 80 CCTV locations and Tameside College’s campuses.

Cllr Bill Fairfoull, Tameside Council’s deputy leader, said: “This is the type of technological change and investment that will make our businesses competitive in the 21st century economy.

“Tameside will soon have unrivalled fibre coverage and internet connectivity speeds that are among the fastest in the country.

“Almost half the borough’s businesses and properties will be close to a connection working through the new state of the art data centre being built as part of the phase II redevelopment of Ashton Old Baths.”

Tim Dixon - innovations and commercial director for digital signage solutions firm ADXBA of Clarendon Road, Hyde – one of the firms taking advantage of the network, commented:  “Our business requires a reliable internet connection to manage screens throughout the UK and Ireland.

“The speed, resilience and scalability of this connectivity is critical to keeping us competitive so that we can continue to expand. Working alongside TDIC offers exciting opportunities for us.”

ITS Technology Group, an alternative full-fibre network provider, is also among the founding members of TDIC. It has incorporated the newly constructed 35km full-fibre ring into its national network, providing a wholesale platform for its partners and resellers.

Chief executive Daren Baythorpe added: “This is one of a number of innovative models in which we have played a pivotal role in developing partnerships with local authorities to support the Government’s full-fibre mission.

“As a result, this gigabit-ready network will deliver transformational digital capabilities to the public-sector organisations, businesses and residents of Tameside.”
