Litter picking and planting boosts community

Date Released - 18/07/2018

YOUNGSTERS collected litter as a community came together to tidy and brighten up their neighbourhood.

Members of Ashton’s Holy Trinity Community Centre did a litter pick in their immediate vicinity and planted hanging baskets.

Children took part in collecting rubbish with supervision by Tameside Council’s Neighbourhood Services, part of a monthly litter pick organised by residents.

The event supports Tameside Council’s Our Streets campaign, which is bringing the local authority and public together to create a cleaner, greener, safer borough.

The hanging baskets were part of a fundraising event towards resurfacing the MUGGA on Blandford Street.

Jigsaw Homes donated plants, soil and baskets as Holy Trinity will be entering In Bloom this year and will be judged in August. Jigsaw also funded three raised beds for growing flowers, vegetables, and herbs, which are being developed as part of an edible garden for members of the community to enjoy.

Residents chose a variety of plants and were shown how to plant the baskets by Tameside Council’s Greenspace officers, as it was the first time many residents had planted anything before.

Centre Manger Carl Kelsall was on hand with his drill to put up brackets outside their homes and residents were given leaflets on how to look after their baskets and will be watering them ready for August.

Mr Kelsall said: “There is evidence that a clean attractive neighbourhood is likely to be more respected and safer than an uncared for community. Our aim is a simple one to encourage all to have a greater sense of community and to help people improve the place where they live and work.”

Cllr Allison Gwynne, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Well done to all involved for brightening up their neighbourhood while having fun. It’s a great example of how to bring everyone together to take pride in their community and make a difference.”
