Tameside celebrates GCSE success

Date Released - 24/08/2018

TAMESIDE pupils are celebrating their GCSE results with more achieving a strong pass in English and Maths.

Standard passes in both English and maths have been achieved by 62% of the borough’s pupils in mainstream schools with 40% of pupils achieving a strong pass.

In English, 76% of the borough’s pupils in mainstream secondary schools achieved a standard pass and in maths 68% of the borough’s pupils in mainstream secondary schools achieved a standard pass. Last year these figures were 74% and 68% respectively.

Despite reformed GCSEs with a more challenging curriculum, many pupils have achieved well.  Last summer, students sat the new exams in English language, English literature and maths but this year more subjects were phased in with more to follow next year.

The reformed GCSEs are subject to a new grading scale of 9 to 1, with 9 being the top grade. A grade four is a "standard pass" and a grade five a "strong pass".

Particular congratulations goes to St Thomas More RC College where 82% of pupils achieved a standard pass and 60% achieved a strong pass, St Damian’s RC Science College where 78% of pupils achieved a standard pass and 57% achieved a strong pass, Fairfield High School for Girls where 78% of pupils achieved a standard pass and 55% of pupils achieve a strong pass and Audenshaw School where 78% of pupils achieved a standard pass and 54% of pupils achieved a strong pass.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Lifelong Learning Cllr Leanne Feeley said: “Congratulations to Tameside pupils as well as teachers, parents and governors for all their hard work and dedication in what continues to be a challenging time for schools as further GCSE reforms are phased in.

“We are pleased with the overall results for Tameside, especially the increased achievements in core subjects and for those schools which have recorded some outstanding performances. We’ll continue to work with all our schools to help them to continue to improve and support pupils in achieving their best to secure a bright future for Tameside.”
