Potential adopters had the opportunity to find out more about the process over a quick chat at a local event.
Adoption professionals, from the agency Adoption Now, came to Ashton-under-Lyne on Tuesday 16 October to answer questions residents had about the adoption process and the children in local authority care.
Tameside Council is supporting National Adoption Week from 15th – 21st October, along with North West-based agency Adoption Now. The aim is to reduce the 3:1 discrepancy between the number of adopters approved and children waiting for families.
As the number of children in need of loving, nurturing homes continues to grow, people in Tameside are urged to step forward and find out more about adoption as a route to building or extending their family.
Adoption Now is a regional adoption agency which delivers all adoption services for the local authorities in Tameside, Blackburn, Bury, Bolton, Rochdale and Oldham.
Currently there are over 80 children waiting for families with Adoption Now. The children, much like adopters, come from a variety of backgrounds including sibling groups, children with special needs or those slightly older.
Karen Barrick, Head of Service at Adoption Now, said: “At Adoption Now we’re proud to support National Adoption Week and encourage people to come to us to find out more about adoption regardless of their race, religion or sexuality. We have a series of events planned across the North West this week, like our stall in Ashton, where we’re speaking to people face to face and answering any queries they have.
“Around 25% of our children have some kind of additional need, ranging from a physical disability to mild learning disabilities. We’re especially keen to find homes for these children who have had a particularly difficult start in life so that they can fulfil their potential.”
Cllr Oliver Ryan, Tameside Council Executive Member for Children’s Services, said: “I really encourage people in Tameside to get in touch if they are considering adoption. We particularly need people who have the room in their home and heart for groups of two or three brothers and sisters, who might wait longer to find the right family. It can be very rewarding to know you’re enabling children who have experienced so much in their young lives to enjoy their childhood together.”
