Toy soldiers mobilised for Stalybridge remembrance

Date Released - 29/10/2018

WATCH out for an elite fighting force will be on the streets of Stalybridge in the run-up to November 11.

Although small, the hand-picked 100 will carry a powerful weapon – the message of Remembrance.

The plastic toy soldiers will be hidden around the town centre from Monday, November 5, as part of Tameside’s 11 Days of Remembrance activities to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

People are invited to look for them and then post pictures of the figures on social media with the hashtag #TamesideRemembers

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s executive member with responsibility for culture, said: “I hope lots of people will join in and look for the toy soldiers because it’s a fun way of getting children and families involved in our remembrance events.

“Even though the First World War ended 100 years ago we’re still affected by it, mainly through the many war memorials in our towns. They tell us of the many hundreds of Tameside men who died in the conflict and it’s only right that we think of them at this special time.”

In addition to the toy figures, a troop of silent soldier silhouettes will also be on parade from November 1 to 11. They will stand watch on the bridge at Portland Basin, Ashton, for a launch event on Thursday, November 1, before being deployed across Tameside’s nine towns.

Memorial events and activities suitable for all ages and interests will then take place across the borough every day until Remembrance Sunday. As well as the hidden toy soldiers, there will be pop-up poppy gardens and doves of peace.

You can get involved by taking your own picture of the tributes and posting on social media with the hashtag #TamesideRemembers We’ll share our favourite photos.
