THE Civic Mayor, Cllr Denise Ward, represented Tameside at a celebration of “ordinary” people whose hard work and contributions to their communities have been recognised by an honour from the Queen.
Organised as part of Black History Month, the event was jointly hosted by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Mr Warren Smith, and the Head of the Honours and Appointments Secretariat, Ms Helen Ewen.
“It was so inspiring to hear the stories behind all these amazing people,” said Cllr Ward.
“The vast majority of UK honours go to people for services to their community, but not many people realise that anyone can nominate a deserving person. It’s straightforward and can be done online.
“It would be fantastic to see more people from our borough nationally recognised, so if you know somebody deserving please nominate them at www.gmhonours.org”
