CHRISTMAS, as Charles Dickens famously put it, is a time when want is keenly felt and abundance rejoices. That’s why Tameside residents are being encouraged to set something aside to provide a little cheer for families in need.
The council is helping to co-ordinate donations for foodbanks and Tameside 4 Good’s toy appeal The intention is that all children will have something to look forward to on Christmas morning, irrespective of their family’s finances, and everyone gets something good to eat.
In terms of food we’re looking for seasonal treats such as Christmas puddings, cakes and mince pies, but also tinned items including curry, fruit, puddings, stew, tomatoes, tuna and vegetables. Coffee, custard, instant mash, long-life milk and squash are also welcome but no baked beans please. The appeal already has enough.
Please drop off foodbank donations by Friday, November 30, and ensure use-by dates are after December 25, 2018. Leave them at any Tameside library, or the customer services centre in Clarence Arcade, Stamford Street, Ashton.
The Tameside 4 Good toy appeal aims to make sure every child, from newborn to 18, living in poverty in Tameside, receives a Christmas present. Donations must be new and unused, and be dropped off up to Monday, December 10.
