Double Success at Greater Manchester Sports Awards

Date Released - 21/11/2018

TWO Pride of Tameside Sports Awards winners achieved success at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards.

Dom Doyle FC, from Denton, won club of the year and Russell Scott Primary School, also from Denton, won the school commitment to PE and sport award.

The presentation evening, which took place at the Emirates Old Trafford cricket stadium, was attended by more than 500 people. It celebrated achievements and the outstanding commitment to physical activity and sport across Greater Manchester over the past year.

Dom Doyle were named Manchester FA team of the year 12 months ago, as well as being Tameside League Cup winners in 2017 and 2018. They were also Lancashire and Cheshire League Cup winners and Wray Cup winners this year, and now hold the club of the year titles from both the Tameside and Greater Manchester sports awards.

The club was formed in memory of Dominic Doyle, a 21-year-old who lost his life protecting his friend from a gang. Members have worked to raise awareness of knife crime and have plans to visit high schools to encourage young people to stay away from drugs, gangs and blades.

Russell Scott Primary’s tireless work to encourage everyone to lead a healthy, active lifestyle led to their success at both the Tameside and Greater Manchester sports awards. The school is driven by its aim to provide high-quality sport and give all children a minimum of two hours’ PE each week.

The school offers traditional and non-traditional sports, such as tri-golf, frisbee, yoga and dance. Their work around healthy eating led to them being awarded the first gold in the Tameside Schools’ Food4Life awards and all children and staff take part in the daily mile. Sports clubs are offered free to break down cost barriers.

Tameside Council executive member CllrGed Cooney said: “I’d like to extend my warmest congratulations to Dom Doyle FC and Russell Scott Primary School on their fantastic achievement.

“Both of them embody what we are trying to do in Tameside. They are leading young people towards a safe and healthy lifestyle and it’s great to see their hard work recognised.”
