Potential adopters will have the opportunity to find out more about adoption at an information evening held in Tameside
The local event starts at 5:00pm on Monday 3 December and is being hosted by regional agency Adoption Now.
It will include a couple of presentations and the chance to find out more about the process from expert social workers.
Adoption Now is a north-west based agency which combines local authority adoption services from Blackburn with Darwen, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside.
Since its launch, just over a year ago, the agency has approved over 68 sets of adopters, matched 135 families with children, placed 167 children with their new families and hosted numerous events from activity days to toddler groups and more.
However, nationally the number of children awaiting adoption outweighs the number of adopters available by three to one.
For its second year, Adoption Now is launching a ‘Help us to 100’ recruitment campaign which aims to help them reach their goal of approving 100 sets of adopters, from all walks of life. There are currently more than 80 children waiting for families with the agency. The children, much like adopters, come from a variety of backgrounds, some need to be placed with brothers and sisters, others may have disabilities or health conditions and others are just that little bit older.
Cllr Oliver Ryan, Tameside Council Executive Member for Children’s Services, said: “We need loving and caring adopters wanting to provide a forever home to a child in need. We’re doing everything possible to make sure we find great adopters and families for our children. Whether you’re a married couple, single, in an LGBT relationship, white or other ethnicity minority or slightly older, please get in touch with Adoption Now today if you have room in your heart and your home.”
Karen Barrick, Head of Service at Adoption Now, said: “Adoption to me means giving our children, who’ve had particularly difficult starts in life, the chance to enjoy playing, growing and learning in safe and loving environments, so that they can reach their full potential. Events like this one in Tameside play a significant part to help us reach our goal of recruiting 100 sets of adopters over the next year, so we can find loving forever homes for our children who really need them.”
