Tameside’s tackling loneliness with Christmas cheer

Date Released - 06/12/2018

Tameside’s community teamed together to organise a Christmas party for older people to help combat loneliness.

Tameside Council was supported by Kerry Foods Hyde who generously hosted the party for more than 40 older people at The Joshua Bradley in Hyde on Thursday. (Dec 6) The firm also offered to arrange transport for those who would find it difficult to get to the venue.

The Council is working to tackle social isolation through its Loneliness Steering Group and by supporting the Campaign to End Loneliness.  Its Population Health Team supports Older People’s Day activities every October, which inspired Kerry Foods to arrange the seasonal event featuring a sumptuous spread, a Christmas sing-a-long, a quiz and games and free goodie bags.

Mayor Councillor Denise Ward attended and the choir from Hyde’s Dowson Primary Academy charmed guests by singing carols.

Co-ordinators at Jigsaw Homes, Onward Homes and Elite Care Services helped with facilitating invitations.

Among those attending were members of Forget-Me-Not Buddies (Tameside), a support group run by carers and volunteers for people living with dementia, their carers and families.

As well as being a great day out, the event gave attendees the chance to get to know others in their community and what services are available.

Kerry Foods hosted a similar event last year at the food manufacturer and supplier’s Godley Hill Road premises.

Tameside Council Executive Leader, Councillor Brenda Warrington, said: “I’d like to thank Kerry Foods for their generosity in again supporting older people in the community by hosting this fabulous Christmas Party, as well as everyone involved for their contribution.

“This time of year can be particularly lonely for some people but events such as this bring people together and help reduce isolation.

“Tameside Council is committed to supporting our older residents all year round and this is just one of the ways we’re tackling loneliness.”

Kerry Foods General Manager Steve Davey said: “Engaging with the communities around our business is extremely important to Kerry Foods and also very rewarding.  We are involved and support a number of community activities throughout the year and it is especially nice to round off each year at Christmas by sharing some time with the groups here today.”
