New recycling campaign launched to encourage Tameside residents to recycle more this Christmas

Date Released - 18/12/2018

RECYCLE for Greater Manchester has teamed up with Tameside Council to launch an informative festive recycling campaign for residents. People in Tameside are being encouraged to ‘Feel Good’ by recycling all their aerosols, glass and plastic bottles and put them in their mixed recycling bin. In addition, they are being reminded to ‘Recycle Responsibly’ and remember to put all their glass and plastic bottles from their festive drinks in the mixed recycling.

Bins in Tameside will be emptied as normal on Christmas Eve but there will be no collections on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Residents due a green bin collection on Christmas Day are asked to put it out on Thursday, December 27. Black and blue bin collections will be on New Year’s Eve.

Those due a green bin collection on Boxing Day should put it out on Friday, December 28. Black or blue bins will be collected on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

Normal collections will take place on Thursday/Friday, December 27 and 28, and Monday, December 31. However, if you’re due a green bin collection on New Year’s Day, it will take place on Thursday, January 3. Blue and Black bins will be collected on Friday, January 4.

There will be no brown bin collections from Christmas Day until Monday, January 7, 2019, when the full programme of collections will resume. Real Christmas trees can be recycled by leaving out with the brown bin for free collection.

At Christmas interest in recycling is higher than at any other time of the year. During the festive period last year, between December 23 and January 1, there were 18,043 searches on Recycle for Greater Manchester’s website from people looking to find out more about recycling. Impressively, that figure is 29% higher than the previous Christmas. This is in line with a nationwide trend that points to more people recycling than ever before; figures show that as a nation we recycle twice as much as we did 15 years ago.

While we are recycling more items across Greater Manchester there is still room for improvement. The new Christmas campaign will act as a timely reminder for residents about which items go in which bin – and to think about missed items. Recent research carried out for Recycle for Greater Manchester has found that 21% of households in Greater Manchester put aerosols in the general waste bin when they are collected for recycling. These overlooked household items are frequently found in Tameside’s general waste bins when they could have been recycled.

Throughout the festive season a series of adverts will be running.  Social media activity will also support the campaign and continue to spread the message about what can be recycled.

Cllr Allison Gwynne, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Recycling rates are higher than ever, with more and more of us recycling. During the festive period many of us have more stuff and it is important to continue to recycle.  We want to make recycling easier at Christmas, and at any other time of year, so anybody who’s not sure how to recycle an item can visit recycleforgreatermanchester.com or the council website and find out more.”
