Tameside Central Library is moving to a new state-of-the-art building at Market Place, Ashton.
The current library at Old Street, Ashton will close at 3pm on Saturday 2 February 2019. The new Ashton Library – part of the Tameside One flagship development – will open at 8.30am on Monday 4 March 2019.
Ashton Library will then have longer opening hours – opening on Mondays and also opening from 8.30 a.m. instead of 9 a.m.
Cllr Brenda Warrington, leader of Tameside Council, said: “Our new state-of-the-art library will offer the full range of services from print and audio books to business and health information, with public computers and free wi-fi. And as a bonus it will be in the same building as the council’s Customer Services, Welfare Rights, Citizens Advice, Jobcentre Plus and the Cash Box Credit Union.”
During the period between the old library closing and the new opening, residents will still be able to access the full range of library services in a variety of ways. Cllr Leanne Feeley, the Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning said:
“You can also use any of Tameside’s other seven libraries. And you can renew your loans online, by phoning 342 2031 or by contacting any other Tameside library. There’s more information on our website at tameside.gov.uk/libraries.
“And if you register for our Open+ scheme, you’ll have even greater flexibility, because Open+ gives you a self-service option to use Tameside’s libraries for much longer opening hours.”
Tameside Council has confirmed that the old library building will be used to house council staff. Leanne Feeley said, “It’s a much-loved building so we’re really pleased to be able to keep it in service as part of Tameside’s living, working architectural heritage.”
The Local Studies and Archive Centre will remain open via Cotton Street East.
