TAMESIDE MBC has confirmed that the Central Art Gallery will close at 1pm on Saturday 2 February 2019 – but the Astley Cheetham Art Gallery will have its opening hours extended from 4 February 2019.
Currently the Astley Cheetham Art Gallery, which is situated above the library on Trinity Street, Stalybridge, is only open every other Saturday. But from 4 February its doors will be open to the public for part of four days every week – Monday and Tuesday mornings, Wednesday afternoons and 10am-3pm on Saturdays.
Cllr Leanne Feeley, Executive Member for Lifelong Learning, said, “Culture can make a big difference to people’s lives, so we’re really pleased to be able to offer extended opening hours at the Astley Cheetham Art Gallery. It’s Tameside’s oldest gallery, a real asset right on our doorstep, and from now on people will have more opportunities to take advantage of it.
“The gallery’s very family friendly and it always has a craft activity on offer. As well as children’s books about artists there’s an I-spy trail of things to spot in the paintings on display.
“The Astley Cheetham gallery has a fascinating history and it’s well worth a visit. You can find out more at tameside.gov.uk/astleycheetham.”
Meanwhile the Council is exploring improvements to the Astley Cheetham Art Gallery in future. And to further enhance Tameside’s cultural offer, the Council is also hoping to re-develop the Museum of the Manchester Regiment, with some additional exhibition space, on the ground floor of Ashton Town Hall.
