Man fined for dumping bags of rubbish in the street

Date Released - 16/12/2022

A MAN has been ordered to pay a total of £684 for dumping rubbish outside a block of flats in Ashton.

Mohammed Hassan Ali, of Burlington Street, Ashton, pleaded guilty at Tameside Magistrates Court on 15 December 2022 to flytipping.

The court heard that on 23 March 2022 a witness reported that they had seen a vehicle pull up on Assheton Close, outside Assheton House, Ashton-under-Lyne and dump three bags of household waste before driving away.

The witness made a note of the registration number of the vehicle and a description of the offender and reported it to Tameside Council.

Following investigation by council officers, it was established that the vehicle belonged to Mohammed Hassan Ali, who then attended an interview under caution and admitted that he had dumped the bags.

Mr Ali told the magistrates that he had made a mistake and he wasn’t thinking straight on that day,  he had been to gym nearby, he saw that there were bins belonging to the flats at Assheton House and decided to leave the bags at the roadside.

He was fined £150 + £34 victim surcharge and ordered to pay £500 towards clean-up and prosecution costs.

Tameside Council Executive Member responsible for Environmental Services Cllr Denise Ward said: “Flytipping is a serious offence and totally unacceptable. It shows a complete disregard to the local environment and community and we will always take robust action against those who are responsible where we have the evidence.

“This prosecution is part of our ongoing work with the local community to clean up the borough and tackle flytipping and littering as part of the Our Streets campaign and I thank the member of the public who came to us with information of what they had witnessed, so that we could investigate further and take enforcement action.”
