Date Released - 28/02/2023

THE Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Mike Glover, said: “Lord Tom Pendry was dedicated to the people of Stalybridge and Hyde and they repaid his service by electing him eight times, making him their longest-serving member of Parliament.

“Even as a government or shadow minister, he always had time for the public and was always prepared to fight to get the best for his constituents.

“His death leaves a void that will be hard to fill. Tom will be deeply missed and nowhere more so than in Stalybridge and Hyde.”

THE executive leader of Tameside Council, Cllr Ged Cooney said: “Lord Tom Pendry gave more than 50 years’ service to Tameside, as MP for Stalybridge and Hyde and then as a member of the House of Lords.

“An Honorary Freeman of the Borough, his constituency and the wider borough were always uppermost in his thoughts and he was a tireless campaigner on the Borough’s behalf.

“Tom, who was an amateur boxer of no mean ability, will perhaps best be remembered for his love of sport. As president of the Football Foundation he continually lobbied in support of both Stalybridge Celtic and Hyde United as well as all levels of the game, from professional to grassroots.

“Our sincere condolences go out to his family at this difficult time.”
