Tameside Market Stall Thinks Green

TAMESIDE Markets are striving to reduce their waste by encouraging their traders to switch to easily recyclable materials. 

Tameside Council have launched the Think Green campaign to inspire residents and local businesses to join the journey to a cleaner and greener Tameside. Think Green is part of Tameside Council’s Climate Change Strategy , an action plan which creates collective responsibility for the borough’s environment.

Helping with the fight against climate change, over the past 5 years Ashton Market have reduced their waste to landfill by 67%. Tameside Markets make a conscious effort to recycle their food, cardboard, glass and plastic waste. Traders are also encouraged to provide recyclable plates, bowls, trays, containers and cutlery.

Tarps Filipino Fusions Street Food, based in Ashton Market, are leading the way by providing their customers with recyclable alternatives. For Takeaway food, Tarps uses fully plant based and fully compostable cutlery. Their food packaging consists of specially made cardboard with grease proof lining and sauces are given to customers in paper packets. 

Tameside Council Executive Member for Climate Emergency and Environmental Service Councillor Denise Ward said: ‘’Well done to Tarp’s for leading the way with their conscious effort to use recyclable materials, their passion for being kinder to our planet really shows. I hope that other traders on our markets follow.

‘’Not forgetting a big thank you to our Markets team for doing their bit to help us fight climate change by actively reducing our plastic waste and guiding traders in the switch to eco-friendly alternatives.’’

From October 2023, subject to Parliamentary approval, businesses must no longer supply, sell or offer certain single-use plastic items in England. Water bottle Re-fill Stations are also located within both Ashton and Hyde’s markets and in local businesses to help reduce plastic waste. All businesses in Tameside can get involved in the Re-fill scheme by having a station installed on their premises.
